RELATIVE PRONOUN
Relative pronoun adalah kata ganti yeng memiliki fungsi untuk menghubungkan anak kalimat pengganti kata sifat. Atau lebih sederhana lagi dapat diartikan bahwa relative pronoun adalah kata ganti yang berfungsi untuk menggabungkan dua buah kalimat menjadi satu dengan membuang bagian-bagian yang sama.
Berikut ini adalah bagian-bagian dari relative pronoun:
1. Who
Who digunakan sebagai pengganti subyek maupun obyek.
Who + p [verb/aux]
Example:
· He is the singer who sings our favorite songs.
· The man who is standing beside the blue car is bobby.
· Harsono who will come here tonight,is a closefriend of mine.
· The girl who is standing under the tree,is my girlfriend.
· The teacher who doesn’t attend the ceremony will also be punished.
2. Whom
Whom digunakan sebagai pengganti obyek.
Whom + S + P
Example:
· Mira is the girl whom andy hates.
· The one whom sono loves is you.
· She know the man whom you invited to your party last night.
· This is the girl whom you want to invite to your house tonight.
3. Whose
Whose digunakan sebagai menggantikan pemilik sesuatu,baik berupa benda,binatang atau pun orang.
Whose + noun + P
Example:
· The girl,whose car is very expensive,is my friend.
· He is the doctor whose books are very much.
· The old man whose wife is in the hospital looks very sad.
· Mia whose car is very expensive is an arrogant girl.
· I looked at the girl whose t-shirt is black.
4. Which
Which digunakan untuk menjelaskan benda bukan orang.
Which + P[verb/aux]
Which + S + P[tanpa objek]
Example:
· The cat which stole the meat is sleeping now.
· We cant afford to buy furniture which is made of very qualified material.
· The book which I think is lost is on Ria’s desk.
· I have came to the place which you just mentioned.
· The book which you are reading now is mine.
5. What
What digunakan untuk menggantikan benda tunggal,tetapi tanpa menyebutkan bendanya.
Example:
· That is what she likes.
· I don’t understand what you mean.
6. That
That digunakan untuk menggantikan benda,binatang atau orang,baik itu yang berkedudukan sebagai subyek atau obyek dalam kalimat.
Example:
· The cat that runs fast is mine
· The girl that is beautiful is my girl friend.
Catatan:
Dalam percakapan bahasa inggris sehari-hari yang sering digunakan saat ini,bentuk relative pronoun ”who,whom,which,that”sering kali dihilangkan atau tidak diucapkan,missal:
· The girl who you invited in your party last night is my sister,menjadi
The girl you invited in your party last night is my sister
