The use of the degrees of comparison

POSITIVE DEGREE(tingkat biasa)

Pada umumnya bentuk positive degree digunakan untuk:

1.     Menyatakan sesuatu dalam keadaan apa adanya.

·       Julia is an attractive girl

·       He is a wise man

·       She is a beautiful girl

2.     Menyatakan bahwa dua orang atau benda memiliki sifat yang sama antara satu dengan yang lainnya.

Pada umumnya digunakan rumus berikut ini:

a)     Untuk affitmative sentence (kalimat berita/positif) dan interrogative sentence (kalimat Tanya)

As + positive degree + as

·       Linda is as beautiful as her mother.

·       Are you as clever as you brother?

·       Harold is as old as my sister.

Atau juga dapat digunakan dengan rumus:

No less + positive degree + than

·       Linda is no less beautiful than her mother.

·       Are you no less clever than your brother?

·       Harold is no less old than my sister.

b)     Untuk negative sentence (kalimat menyangkal/negative)

So + positive degree + as

·       Laura is not so beautiful as her sister.

·       Iam not so clever as him.

·       His car is not expensive as mine.

Atau juga dapat digunakan dengan rumus:

Less + positive degree + than

·       Laura is less beautiful than her sister.

·       Iam les clever than him.

·       His car less expensive than mine.

COMPERATIVE DEGREE (tingkat lebih)

Pada umumnya bentuk comperative degree digunakan untuk membandingkan dua benda atau orang yang berbeda dan boleh juga dikatakan bahwa comperative degree digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa sesuatu memiliki sifat”lebih” dibandingkan dengan yang lain.

Pada umumnya bentuk comparative degree digunakan dengan rumus:

Comparative degree + than

·       He is weaker than this borther.

·       My house is more expensive than his.

·       Jessica is taller than sarah.

Comparative degree juga dapat digunakan untuk:

       I.          Menyatakan keadaan yang semakin…………

·       The higher you climb up a mountain,the colder the air is.

·       The harder you study,the cleverer you will be.

     II.          Menyatakan suatu sifat atau keadaan suatu benda atau orang yang “ makin lama makin…”atau lebih …lagi”.bentuk ini dilakukan dengan pengulangan terhadap dua bentuk comparative degree dan menghubungkannya dengan kata “dan”.

·       She is getting more and more beautiful.

·       This tree is higher and higher.

   III.          Apabila kata “musch” digunakan dibagian depan bentuk comparative degree,maka akan memiliki arti “jauh lebih…daripada…..

·       Today is much better than yesterday.

·       Your book is much cheaper than mine.

  IV.          Apabila akan membandingkan dua benda atau orang .

·       She is the more beautiful of the two girl.

·       My car is the more expensive of the two cars.

SUPERLATIVE DEGREE (tingkat paling)

Pada umumnya bentuk superlative degree secara umum digunakan untuk membandingkan tiga benda atau lebih

The + superlative degree + nouns + in

The + superlative degree + of

·       Julian js the cleverest student in our class.

·       He is the youngest of all the student.

·       She is the happiest girl in the park.

Atau bentuk superlative degree juga digunakan dengan rumus:

The + superlative degree

·       His car is the most expensive.

·       Dean is the youngest in his family.

·       My ruler is the longest.

Kata “very” terkadang juga bias dugunakan sebagai penegas atau penekanan terhadap bentuk superlative degree.kata “very” diletakkan di antara “the” dan “superlative degree”

Kata very memiliki arti”benar-benar”atau “yang sebenarnya”

·       His car is the very cheapest of all the cars.

·       Barney is the very best student in our class.
